How it works

Exact answer

In Excel or Google Sheets, count characters with and without whitespace, plus words and lines, as you type or paste text.

▤Step by step
1

Type or paste the text into the input box.

2

Read the character total and the count with whitespace removed.

3

Check the separate word and line totals; edit the input to update every count immediately.

What this does

The counter reports characters in the text, a second count with all whitespace removed, whitespace-separated words and newline-separated lines. Some emoji count as two characters in this tool, so a total can differ from the number of visible symbols.

A worked example

Enter `Invoice 2026-014`, a line break, then `Bolt M8, qty 42`. The result is 32 characters, 27 without whitespace, 6 words and 2 lines. Spaces, tabs and line breaks count as characters in the main total. The no-whitespace total removes all three, not only ordinary spaces.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing the main total with a count that excludes spaces or line breaks.
  • Assuming punctuation creates a new word; words are separated by whitespace.
  • Expecting an empty input to contain one line; it reports zero lines.

FAQ

Are spaces included in the character count?

Yes. The main total includes spaces, tabs and line breaks; the second total removes all whitespace.

How are words counted?

Any run of non-whitespace characters counts as one word.

Which Excel formula counts characters?

`=LEN(A2)` counts characters in A2. `=LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A2," ",""))` removes ordinary spaces before counting.

Does one emoji always count as one character?

No. For example, this tool counts `😀` as 2 characters. Emoji sequences can contribute several characters; the total is not a count of visible symbols.
