Create a Chart
Choosing the chart type is the only decision that matters here, and it follows from the question your data answers rather than from the gallery. Amounts across named categories want columns or bars; a value tracked over time wants a line; one category's share of a total wants a pie, and only with a handful of slices; two measured variables tested against each other want a scatter. What gets highlighted matters nearly as much, because Excel reads the first row as series names and the first column as category labels — a tidy block with a single heading row and no gaps in it produces the intended chart first time, where a scattered selection produces an argument.
A worked example
A1:B13 holds one year of sales — A2:A13 the months Jan through Dec 2025, B2:B13 the revenue for each (12,400, then 11,900, then 15,200, and so on down to December).
Click any cell in the block, press Alt+F1, then use Chart Design > Change Chart Type to put a Clustered Column and a Line side by side over the same twelve numbers.
Alt+F1 gives you a clustered column chart, because that is Excel's default type. Both charts plot exactly the same twelve values, but the columns invite you to compare one month against another, while the line makes the shape of the year — the February dip, the climb through Q4 — the thing you actually see. Same data, different question answered, and that is the entire basis for choosing a chart type.

Frequently asked questions
Why did Excel plot my year column as a data series instead of as labels?
Years are numbers, so Excel treats that column as one more thing to plot rather than as the category axis. Open Select Data, remove the year entry from the Legend Entries list, then use Edit under Horizontal (Category) Axis Labels and point it at the year range. Formatting the column as text before you insert the chart avoids the problem entirely.
What is the fastest way to insert a chart without touching the ribbon?
Click one cell inside the data block and press Alt+F1 for a chart embedded on the current sheet, or F11 for one on its own full-screen chart sheet. Both use whatever Excel has set as the default chart type, which out of the box is a clustered column; you can change it afterwards from Chart Design > Change Chart Type without rebuilding anything.
Can I change the chart type after the chart is already built?
Yes, and you should experiment. Chart Design > Change Chart Type swaps the drawing while keeping the same series, the same source range and most of the formatting you have applied, so trying a line against a column costs a few seconds. Only the type-specific settings, such as a pie chart's explosion or a scatter chart's marker options, are discarded.
Why does my chart have the rows and columns the wrong way round?
Excel guesses which direction is series and which is categories from the shape of your selection, and it guesses wrong on roughly square blocks. Select the chart, then Chart Design > Switch Row/Column flips the two without altering the source data. If the chart is empty or nearly so, the selection probably included a blank row or column that broke the block in half.
