Slicers
Select any cell inside your Excel Table or PivotTable first, since a slicer can only attach to one of those two, not a plain range, then go to Insert > Slicer (or PivotTable Analyze > Insert Slicer), tick the column you want filter buttons for, and click OK. Click a button to filter down to that one value, or hold Ctrl and click several to select more than one; a highlighted button shows it's currently active. Google Sheets has a different flow entirely: Data > Add a slicer, pick the range, then set a filter condition or values — no Table object required first, but each slicer only filters one column.
A worked example
A Table named SalesTable spans B1:E40 with a Region column holding values like East, West, North and South.
Select a cell in SalesTable > Insert > Slicer > tick Region > OK, then click the East button in the slicer that appears
The slicer shows one button per region; clicking East highlights that button and filters SalesTable down to Region = East rows only — click another button, or the small filter icon in the slicer's corner, to change or clear the filter.

Why is Insert > Slicer greyed out?
Slicers can only attach to an Excel Table or a PivotTable, not a plain range. Click any cell inside the data first — if it isn't already a Table, select the range and press Ctrl+T — then Insert > Slicer becomes available.
Can one slicer filter several PivotTables at once?
Yes, but only among PivotTables built from the same source data: right-click the slicer, choose Report Connections, and tick every PivotTable it should control. A single slicer can't be connected to both a Table and a PivotTable at the same time.
Does Google Sheets have slicers?
Yes, but the flow is different from Excel: Data > Add a slicer, pick the range, chart or pivot table, then set a filter condition or uncheck specific values. Sheets slicers don't need a Table object first, but each one filters only one column — add more slicers for more columns — and they don't filter formulas that reference the same data.
Why did my Google Sheets slicer filter disappear when someone else opened the file?
Slicer selections in Google Sheets are private to whoever set them and aren't saved by default. Click the slicer, open its menu, and choose Set as default so the current filter applies for everyone who opens the sheet.
